Northern Lights Forecast for Levi

Levi is a major ski resort town in Lapland, Finland, which makes it a highly convenient spot if you want to combine winter sports with aurora viewing. Because it sits well above the Arctic Circle, the northern lights are visible for a large portion of the year, provided the skies are clear.

While the village center itself has too much light pollution for optimal viewing, you only need to walk or drive a short distance to find dark, open skies.

Good Viewing Spots Around Levi

• Lake Immeljärvi: This is one of the easiest spots to reach if you are staying in the village. It’s about a 10-minute walk from the center. The lake freezes over in winter, creating a wide, flat area with an unobstructed view facing north.
• Levi Fell and Utsuvaara: Getting higher up helps you escape the ground-level light pollution. You can drive or take a tour up to the Utsuvaara parking area or the top of Levi Fell (Levitunturi). If there are low-hanging clouds in the village, heading up the fell can sometimes get you above the cloud layer.
• Ounasjoki River: Located a bit further out from the resort, the riverbanks are quiet and dark, offering a peaceful environment away from the holiday crowds.
• Kätkätunturi: A neighboring fell that requires a bit more physical effort to hike, but it offers a completely unlit, natural vantage point.

The Aurora Season

The northern lights season in Levi runs from late August through mid-April.

During September and October, the lakes aren’t fully frozen yet, so you can often see the aurora reflecting on the water. February and March are peak tourist months; the snow base is thick for skiing, and the nights are still long and dark enough for reliable aurora hunting. By late April, the midnight sun begins to return, making the sky too bright to see the lights.

Daytime Activities

Since you need to wait for nightfall to see the aurora, Levi has plenty to fill the daylight hours.

• Skiing and Snowboarding: Levi is Finland’s largest ski resort. It hosts the Alpine World Cup in November and has an extensive network of downhill slopes and cross-country ski tracks.
• Wilderness Safaris: Dog sledding, reindeer sleigh rides, and snowmobiling are standard here. Many local operators also run evening wilderness tours specifically aimed at finding the northern lights.
• Elves Village (Tonttula): A local attraction based on Finnish folklore and mythology, located just a short drive from the center.
• Ice Karting: A popular local activity where you drive studded go-karts on a frozen outdoor track.

Levi is a practical choice if you want modern resort amenities, a walkable town, and quick access to the dark wilderness.
